Educate Online Executive Team

Joseph Olchefske, President

Joseph Olchefske recently joined Educate Online after distinguished careers in both the K-12 public education arena and the investment banking industry. As EO’s President, he is responsible for leadership of the vision and strategy for expanding EO and the impact of its tutoring services for students throughout the country.

Previously, Mr Olchefske was a Managing Director at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), where he played a lead role in the development of AIR’s School District Consulting Practice. At AIR, his work focused on consulting with large urban school systems and state departments of education in the development of large-scale reform strategies to increase student achievement and eliminate the achievement gap. Mr. Olchefske’s work included major projects for the Oakland Unified School District, the Chicago Public Schools, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Hartford Public Schools and a number of urban districts in Texas.

Prior to joining AIR, Mr. Olchefske served as the Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools from 1998 to 2003. As SPS Superintendent, he served as the chief executive officer of a public school system with 47,000 students, 100 schools, 7000 employees and an annual operating budget of $435 million. During his tenure as Superintendent, SPS students experienced significant improvements in student achievement across every major academic performance measure and significant declines in the dropout rate, the truancy rate, suspension/expulsion rates and in safety/security incidents.

Before joining the Seattle Public Schools, Mr. Olchefske spent 12 years as an investment banker in the public finance department at Piper Jaffray, where he served as an underwriter and financial advisor to a wide variety of local governments throughout the Pacific Northwest. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago and he received a Master's Degree in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

John McAuliffe, Chief Financial Officer

John McAuliffe joined Educate Online Inc. as chief financial officer in February 2008, and has lead all financial functions of the company since then. He has dedicated his career to guiding the fiscal growth and development of education industry companies.

Prior to Educate Online, McAuliffe was senior vice president and chief financial officer at Thomson Prometric, the world’s largest computer-based testing organization. During his tenure at Prometric, McAuliffe led the company’s significant growth in revenue and operating income as well as the consolidation of the organization’s finance functions, while reducing operating costs.

McAuliffe joined Prometric after the company’s acquisition of Capstar, a subsidiary of Education Testing Services, where he was chief operating officer. Prior to Capstar, McAuliffe was the president of General Physics Corporation, a training and consulting organization. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Loyola College in Baltimore.

David Blair, Vice President of Operations


David Blair joined Educate Online in the spring of 2009 as Vice President of Operations. He has responsibility for driving growth and profitability by managing the overall student experience throughout the instructional lifecycle. The key functional areas include Teacher Operations, Prescription Monitoring, Contracts and District Reporting, Program Management, and Technical Support.

Prior to joining Educate Online, Blair was a Management Consultant with Ernst & Young and held several executive positions with Prometric, a division of Educational Testing Services, which included the following:

- Responsible for the profit and loss of the paper-based testing division;

- Managed the global help desk organization of 140 personnel in 8 countries, supporting 10,000 testing locations worldwide;

- Led the Program Management team of 120 personnel at 3 locations;

- Managed two teams responsible for evaluating and planning $20M capital in the areas of software development for new technology projects and test center development for new or enhanced testing locations

Blair holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia.

Kristin M. Bannerman, Director of Government Relations

Kristin M. Bannerman brings more than a decade of experience in education policy and public service to her role as director of government relations at Educate Online Inc. She is responsible for building and strengthening the company’s relationships with government leaders and education policy makers on the state and national level.

Bannerman spent eight years of her career on Capitol Hill in the executive branch, serving as a deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Education under Secretary Margaret Spellings and as an education policy advisor to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Educational and Early Childhood Development. In addition, she was a legislative assistant to both U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (R–Ohio) and U.S. Congressman Jay Dickey (R–Ark.).

Earlier in her career, Bannerman was a social worker in New York City and a Teach for America Corps elementary school teacher in Houston, Texas. She has a Masters Degree in social work from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts from Emory University in Atlanta.

Maggie M. Hird, Executive Director of Human Resources

Maggie M. Hird has been with the Educate Online/Sylvan Learning companies for more than six years, and currently serves as the director of human resources for Educate Online Inc. She is responsible for overseeing the education company’s employee recruitment, training, culture development, compensation, and benefits.

Previously, Hird was a human resources manager at T. Rowe Price and vice president of human resources at both Federal Data Corporation and AMERICOM Inc. She holds a Masters of Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Business degree from Western Illinois University.

Educate Online administers an assessment to determine the exact areas in which each student needs improvement and tailors a math or reading program for that student; no two lessons are alike.
